Why "Strategies" Don't Work

It takes a special kind of person to take the entrepreneurial route. One must be willing to deal with uncertainty and take full ownership of the good and the bad in their business. Especially for solopreneurs, there really is no one else to blame when things go wrong.

So, when we find ourselves struggling to get our business going, our initial reaction is to blame things outside of ourselves. We might justify it with “my list is too small”, “my Facebook ads didn’t work” or “my website doesn’t look professional enough”.

These may all be true to some degree. But, the worst part is that on a deeper level, we also think “what’s wrong with me?”, “why can’t I just figure it out?” or “why did I even want to start my business?”

Here’s the truth: unless you have the Basics down, no strategy will EVER work.

EVER.

What are the Basics?

One part of the Basics are the Principles every business is built on:

  • knowing EXACTLY what you offer
  • knowing EXACTLY why you offer it
  • knowing EXACTLY who you offer it to
  • knowing EXACTLY how you offer it
  • knowing EXACTLY when you offer it

You would be surprised at how many entrepreneurs are not clear on all or some of these Principles. So, you’ll see them offering a bunch of disjointed offers that don’t really add up to a whole.

When you don't offer a cohesive whole to your clients, they won’t buy from you.

When you haven’t figured out all these Principles, they don’t line up perfectly and you can’t stand behind everything you do with 100% confidence, your clients won’t buy from you.

Why should they buy from you, if you, yourself, aren’t sure about what you do?

And when they don’t buy from you, you go back to justifying with “my list is too small”, “my Facebook ads didn’t work” or “my website doesn’t look professional enough”.

And then to thinking “what’s wrong with me?”, “why can’t I just figure it out?” or “why did I even want to start my business?”

… welcome to Limbo Land.

So, if you find yourself in Limbo Land in this moment, here’s the deal. Figuring out the Principles isn’t hard, and it shouldn’t take a long time either. Because at its core, your business isn’t about these Principles.

At its core, your business is about YOU, which is the second, and most important, part of the Basics.

Your business is born from you and nurtured by you.

Your business is about accessing YOUR zone of genius, directing it to YOUR one thing and finding YOUR niche.

Once you nail this down, the Principles flow. They just do:

  • You create offers easily because you know EXACTLY what to offer
  • You magnetize clients because you know EXACTLY why you do the work you do
  • Your marketing flows because you know EXACTLY who you want to reach and work with
  • Your packages work because you know EXACTLY how you want to serve your clients
  • Your timing is aligned because you know EXACTLY when to put out your new offers

Your business flows because YOU are aligned.

Listen, it’s easy to hope that increasing your list size, outsourcing your Facebook ads to an expert, or rebranding your website will be the magic bullet to turn your business around. You can certainly give those a try.

What’s NOT easy is getting the Basics down. It takes a special kind of entrepreneur.
